As the proud owner of a Nelson Makamo pen and ink work, I have a special interest in this exhibition. Makamo’s work, which reminds of Marlene Dumas’ images, is powerful, enigmatic and engaging, even in small scale.

News from Arts on Main at the Maboneng precinct in eastern downtown Joburg: 

Nelson Makamo , Senzo  Shabangu and Lehlogonolo Mashaba are three young Johannesburg based artists coming of age in post-1994 South Africa. Shaped by their country’s  political landscape, this generation of artists has born witness to political, economic, and cultural  transition. They celebrate  shifts in  social realities via the creation of a local language that is framed by  a range of practices and clashes against years of isolation. They are expressing their world through creative visions informed by the changes the country has seen.
