Jozi’s first art hotel: 12 Decades near Arts on Main

12 Decades Johannesburg Art Hotel is a new developments in the eastern part of downtown Joburg, an area often avoided by tourists. Kate Els in her article in Tourismupdate.co.za writes:

Engaging with local artists who mainly operate in the surrounding precinct, the developers of the hotel asked different artists to each design a room that would reflect a decade in the history of the city’s 120 years. This has led to an interactive hotel that engages its guests with the dynamic history of the city, good and bad. The room numbers of the 12 rooms, which offer a comfortable mid-market stay, are the same as the decade they reflect. Each en-suite room comprises a large bedroom with small kitchenette. A restaurant will soon open downstairs that will cater for guests’ needs and a roof-top pool, sky bar and boxing gym will soon be completed. The hotel is located in the same building, Main Street Life, as Malva retail store and The Bioscope, which regularly features art house films and hosts film festivals.

I can not think of any thing that they could have done better. I stay in many 4 and 5 star hotels around the world and this is one of my favorite places to stay, it is a relaxed, friendly location with a peaceful atmosphere. Peter Coote UK 03/12/10

Liz and her staff were very welcoming to us as deaf visitors. Also, she helped us arrange a next stay at Karoo. It was nice of her. I was very impressed with their quality of breakfast food which was organic, natural, and healthy. Thank you for your excellent service.
