Concert on the Deck – Love, Life & Opera– Sat 25th February 2012 15h00 – 17h30

From Gingko’s newsletter:

With February being the month of love, we thought we’d put together a programme that would celebrate some of the world’s greatest love songs. Michèle Corbin (soprano) and Donato Somma (tenor) will perform a wonderful selection of operatic, traditional Napolitan and more contemporary works to the accompaniment of pianist Susan Harrop-Allin.

Works include (among others) the beautiful Libiamo from Verdi’s La Traviata, Morrcone’s Nella Fantasiamade famous by Sarah Brightmanand more recently by Il Divo, the fabulous-for-singing-in-the-shower-on-your-own O Sole Mio,

We’ll be serving a special array of typical Italian street food, including antipasto platters, bagnacauda with grissini & raw veg for dipping, loads of different but equally delicious bruschetta, polenta fritta croccante otherwise know as polenta chips with muffaletta to dunk them in, popcorn w garlic & parmigiano and then luscious strawberries with balsamic glaze and tiramisu for dessert!

The concert is R100.00 per person. Book your table soonest as seats are limited as you know! Email Catherine@gingko.co.za. You’re welcome to come earlier for lunch and simply stay on, or plan on a late lunch accompanied by some of the world’s most delightful music.

Andrea Burgener, who owned and ran Superbonbon in Auckland Park and then Deluxe at 44 Stanley, has opened The Leopard on 4th Ave Parkhurst, so adding to the choice of upmarket pavement restaurants in this eating-out destination. Her quirky style and superb food make The Leopard a ‘must-visit’. I went there for lunch last week and as always, Andrea’s menu offers unusual fare and when the dishes arrive they are as delicious and subtle as the mouth-watering descriptions suggest. We had a roasted beetroot, chickpea, and feta salad with a sweet mustard vinaigrette – visually sensual with the chick peas soaking up the pink of the beetroot, and a superb Caesar salad with a hint of chilli. Breakfast fare includes dishes like Pistachio-rolled labneh with star-anise poached pears , pannekoek with klipdrift cherries and cream, and basil mushrooms on toast. Decor is typically Andrea, with great swathes of coloured cloth for napkins, hanging lights of different styles, and kids stickers in rectangular shapes on the walls. It’s bright, fresh, airy and the food is to die for. Breakfast is served from 10 to 5 and lunch from 12 to 3. Closed on Sundays and as yet no licence (so bring your own) and no credit cards (there’s an ATM next door). Really worth a visit. For more on The Leopard see http://www.timeslive.co.za/food/2011/10/31/andrea-burgener-re-enters-the-food-fray-with-the-leopard-in-parkhurst

For those not familiar with Joburg and the Parks region, Parkhurst is the next suburb to the south of Craighall Park and Liz at Lancaster Guesthouse is a 5 minute drive from 4th Ave Parkhurst.

What makes Rosebank so different from say, for example, Sandton. While Sandton’s leisure and shopping area is focused on the huge enlcosed megamall of Sandton City and the central space of Mandela Square modelled on an Italian piazza. Rosebank however has a greater variety of smaller malls linked by open air areas each with their own different identity. There is the Rosebank Mall with its now famous Rooftop Market on a Sunday and Craft market all week, the Zone for urban fashion designers and Bollywood movies, the Zone 2 behind the Holiday Inne and the exclusive Firs linked to the Hyatt Hotel. What makes this such a fun urban area is the way in which these malls all interlink with open spaces filled with stalls, open-air eateries, gently flowing fountains and interesting arcades. One of the many eateries is Koi – a specialist seafood restaurant in the arcade outside the Firs corner Cradock and Bierman Avenues, Rosebank 011 447 2440. See http://www.jhblive.com/reviews/restaurants/the_joy_of_koi/86530 There is easy close parking at the Galleria Rooftop parking in Cradock Street right opposite Koi.

The service might be a little slow when it’s busy but the prices are VERY reasonable. Plus if they are full, they take your name and phone you when they have a table ready for you. This means you can wander off and do some browsing in some of the funs shops along 4th Ave. Not many restaurants will do that.
