The opening of the Gautrain station at Rosebank is beginning to make a difference to people who want to stay in the Parks region of Johannesburg (the greater Rosebank Region) despite doing business further afield. A guest staying at Liz at Lancaster at the moment is working at a corporate office in Isando but did not want to stay over in the east near the airport. He takes the Gautrain daily from the Rosebank Station to Rhodesfield and then gets a lift from a colleauge from the office nearby the station – 25 minutes door to door. Increasingly it seems the Gautrain will be used by commuters so it’s a pity that the opening of the Rosebank to Joburg Central link is delayed (now not due to open before April 2013) See http://www.rosebank.co.za/view/index/gautrain_to_open_soon/62/1/139

The construction of Standard Bank’s new headquarters in Rosebank is well under way. This 11 storey building is spread over an entire block bounded by Oxford and Cradock, Bolton and Baker Roads. At present the builders are trying to pour concrete from inside the excavation, but this will only continue to be possible if it does not rain and only for the next month and half. Thereafter they will be pouring concrete and unloading trucks from the road and possible lane closures will be necessary almost daily. The trucks will take a few hours to unload; or it may take the whole day.

Standard Bank is just one development underway in Rosebank which is set to take off particulalry when the Gautrain station opens in August 2011. Lael Bethlehem (who used to head up Johannebsurg Development Agency) says: ‘Rosebank has huge potential for a mixed-use type of environment, especially if it had more green spaces. It’s got much more pedestrian space than Sandton, for instance, which is more car-friendly.’

We will try and use Oxford road as much as possible, we will also use Craddock avenue’s parking bays so as to avoid closing of lanes to try and minimise the disturbance to the traffic.

Mail and Guardian (June 18-24; Vol 26 no 23 p 12)) ran an article by Duduzile Mathebula entitled ‘We love you South Africa – World Cup tourists give the country the thumbs up but public transport is a major gripe’. It seems that most of the foreign visitors are ‘overwhelmingly positive’ about their initial experiences in this country. Firm favourites amongst fans to Jozi are the vibe and people of Soweto, the Rosebank market, the variety of shopping generally, the Apartheid Museum, and game viewing in the Pilanesberg. Fans are generally happy with the wide range of activities and sites on offer. However all is not rosy – while some have been lucky with their transport arrangements, others have complained about the lack of clarity around the details of transport options as well as things not running smooth with major delays. I was quoted as follows:

‘Liz Delmont, the proprietor of top-rated guest house Liz at Lancaster, says her foreign guests are often surprised that ‘Joburg is a modern functioning city’, especially after the horror stories in the media back home,. But she feels the city will not be truly tourist friendly until it solves its public transport problems’.

I remain frustrated that with our extensive rail, road and transport infrastructure, our varied pool of existing transport providers, and our high rate of unemployment, we as Joburgers were still not able to ‘get our act together’ in time for the influx of World Cup visitors and have not been able to give reliable information about transport arrangements, nor deliver consistent and efficient transport around the city and to and from games.
